The Walker-Montgomery Community Development Corporation (WMCDC) was founded in the summer of 1999 as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). The organization was born out of a determination by the management and Board of Directors of the Gulf Coast Trades Center (GCTC) to expand affordable housing in the area. Previously, GCTC, which provides training and education for adjudicated youth from around the State of Texas, participated in the Youth Build program developing affordable housing for low and moderate income families in New Waverly, Texas. It was decided in 1999, that a separate organization, whose focus was entirely housing, was needed and thus the WMCDC was created. WMCDC was officially recognized as a CHDO by the State of Texas in September 2000. Currently, the Center and WMCDC share staff and facilities.

In recognition of its achievements, WMCDC was named as the Developer of the Year by Region 6 Rural Development division of the USDA and as Employer of the Year by Brazos Valley Workforce Development Board.

The Walker-Montgomery Community Development Corporation is governed by an independent Board of Directors, with representation from Housing providers, social service providers, and members of the Board of Trustees from the Gulf Coast Trades Center. The Internal Revenue Service has recognized the Walker-Montgomery Community Development Corporation as an independent 501(c) (3) corporation.
